A Special Note About WebSite Addresses
Your website address or Universal Resource Locator (URL) is as important to you as your street address. This address is sometimes referred to as a Domain Name. When locating your business, one doesn't usually have much choice of the street name and number. It is a different situation with your internet address. There are associated TradeMark issues to consider as well! One must not choose coke.com unless you are a famous soda manufacturer!
When setting up your website, one may exercise a choice of URL! A trade off of cost is a consideration since one may choose a "Virtual Hosted" WebSite which makes free use of a HostSite Domain Name. In which case your URL will be something like http://www.hostname.com/yourname where the hostname.com is the hosting WebSite Domain Name, like ToThe.com, for example.
Also, the Virtual Host arrangement allows one to make free use of the HostSite computer filespace and other infrastructure required to run your WebSite. This saves some recurring costs! The downside with this arrangement is that one must include the hostname.com in your URL. This is not too bad if the hostname.com is something neutral like ToThe.com, which is neutral and non connotative. Something like http://www.dumkopf.com/yourname would be less desirable, to say the least, unless maybe you run a comedy club!
One other disadvantage of the Virtual Hosted site is that this type of URL is not portable. If you want to move your WebSite to another hosting vendor someday, you will have to change your URL to a different hostname.com. The "yourname" part would stay the same or change as you wish. Of course, an advantage (in addition to lower cost) is that the "yourname" part can be anything you choose. There is only one flowers.com and someone else may already have it registered but you may
have hostname.com/flowers as a valid URL. Many businesses may include "flowers" in their URL as long as it doesn't impact someone else's TradeMark!
The internet technology provides, as an alternative, a permanent and portable URL that can be registered. This arrangement is a "Full Hosted" WebSite and must include a dedicated WebSite hosting infrastructure and registration of your Domain Name is required. This feature is currently an additional $400/year over any other stated costs which includes the dedicated WebSite Full Host infrastructure.
One may choose something in your Domain Name that refers or connotes your business interest such as flowers.com for example, if it's not already registered by someone else. One should consider the circumstances of the URL early in a decision to set up a WebSite because your address will be recorded in everyone's address book making an address change later costly. A distinct advantage of the Full Hosted WebSite is that one may move the WebSite to a different Internet Presence Provider (IPP) without a URL change. Another advantage is that your chosen and registered Domain Name may connote something about your business.
Most WebSites are Virtual Hosted because it's just less costly and easier to maintain a good Web Presence in this manner! It is a matter that should be carefully considered because it will probably be with you forever.
